The Verdict on Veil

Today I was trying out a new primer called Veil from Hourglass. It is reputed to make all makeup effectively waterproof and stay in place all day. Well did it?

I used just one small pump and applied it with a synthetic brush as recommended - when it comes to primers, a little goes a long way. I then used my regular Estee Lauder foundation, used concealer where I needed it, put on some MAC cream blusher and used a bit of Benefit Hoola to create the illusion of cheekbones  to and finished off with a bit of bronzer. Bascially my usual routine.

In keeping with my usual routine, I hot-footed it to the station to make my overland train and then did the usual “warm up” routine fast trotting to the tube where I worked up a gentle sweat on a crowded train with my fellow commuters. When I got to the office and before I had a chance to check myself in the mirror, one of my colleagues commented that I looked so fresh and asked if I’d had a good night’s sleep or something. In fact I’d had a rather bad night. Again. So I’m crediting Veil for my fresh look!

When I got home at the end of a fairly long day after a few more opportunities to warm up and “gently glow”, I looked at myself in the bathroom mirror and noted that I still had visible blusher on and most of my makeup! Pretty impressive.

In conclusion, Veil did a pretty fine job! It not only brightened my complexion, but made me look rested and kept my makeup in place all day. I’m giving it top marks. Space NK describe it as follows:

“A mineral-based, water-resistant primer with SPF 15 that creates an impossibly smooth canvas and seamless look.

Veil eliminates redness, minimizes pore size, softens fine lines and creates a uniform canvas for a flawless makeup application. This clean, satin-finish formula helps keep makeup looking fresh and prevents fading, while SPF 15 shields the skin from the sun”

This weekend I’m going to try a Smashbox primer and see how that matches up!

Welcome 2013

Well so far, 2013 seems to be a year of endless possibilities – but then the sun is shining, I haven’t had to do my first commute yet and the reality of my participation in the Cancer Research Dryathlon won’t hit me until wine o’clock. Still, I think it’s shaping up to be a good one.

This year I might actually write a regular blog, get my makeup career off the ground (albeit part time for now), and establish myself in my new (permanent – eek) job. And whilst doing all this, I also plan to embark on some sort of diet / fitness regime to get me back into my salopettes for an early March ski trip and at least fit enough to walk all the way down a slope too steep for my beginner ski skills - whilst carrying skis and poles on my shoulder and weeping at the unfairness of it all.

Sound like a lot? Well, I had a decent night’s sleep last night so I’m feeling ambitious, but watch this space for makeup tips, commuter rants, fashion commentary and general joviality and vitriol in (hopefully) equal measures!

Happy 2013, may all your dreams come true!
